There are significant disparities in geographic access to asthma care between and within states. The accompanying figure shows the distribution of the distance to asthma specialist care sites estimated at the census tract level for 14 states using a centralized optimization model. The within-state median distance varies from 2 to 6 miles whereas the maximum can go beyond 50 miles.
